コンピュータで使われる用語「スクロール」、語源は日本の巻物(巻子本)だった！

木版画のアーティストや、その他の分野でクリエイティブな仕事に携わる方々（例えば、コンピュータを駆使して動画・映像制作に携わるクリエーター）を主な対象に、日本の藝術形式を古典籍に学ぶワークショップを開催します。

古典籍とは江戸末まで約1200年間にわたって、継続し製作されてきた書物を指し、さまざまな形態があります。例えば巻子本(巻物)、綴じ本、折本、屏風などが代表的ですが、書かれている内容により形態が異なるなどの特徴があります。

製本に使う材料や道具では、将来の修復のために剥がれやすい糊を使う、容易に解体できるように糸で綴じるなどもまた興味深い点で、これら昔からの製本法、素材や道具に日本の文化の特性を見ることができます。

木版画で製作された冊子本の本文中に差し加えられた絵が、やがて量産を目指す版画として展開して浮世絵として普及したことも興味深い点です。

今回のワークショップは、コンピュータを駆使して動画・映像制作している、日本のクリエーターの表現のバックボーンについて、巻子本、折本、屏風などの製作を通して知識と技術を学ぶことが出来ます。

ワークショップは、二週に渡り土曜日、日曜日を開催日として、計4日間となります。

Workshop “Learning Japanese art form from traditional books”

Did you notice that the computer term “scroll” has the same etymology as Japanese traditional scrolls?

We are going to hold a workshop to learn Japanese art form from traditional books for Mokuhanga artists and those who are working in other creative fields, such as creators who are involved in image and video production making full use of computers.

The traditional books refer to books produced continuously for about 1200 years until the end of Edo period. There are various forms, such as scrolls, bound books, folding books and folding screens. In general, the form differed depending on the contents.

It is interesting to study what materials and tools were used for bookbinding. They used glue that was easy to peel off for future restoration, and bound books with thread so that they could be easily disassembled. You can see the characteristics of Japanese culture here.

The illustrations of the books printed with woodblock were developed as prints aimed at mass production and eventually became ukiyo-e, which was extremely popular in Edo period. It is also an interesting fact.

In this workshop is designed for creators who are involved in image and video production by making full use of computers. We would like to propose them an opportunity to learn the backbone of their expressions.

The workshop will be held for 4 days on 2 weekends in succession (on Saturdays and Sundays).
