We are pleased to announce the open call for the MI-LAB AIR 2027.

Mokuhanga Innovation Laboratory (MI-LAB) have been holding Artist-in-Residence programs of water-based woodblock printmaking techniques in Fujikawaguchiko-cho, Yamanashi Prefecture since 2011. We moved to Echizen, Fukui Prefecture after the residency season of 2023 and started the new AIR season at our Echizen Studio in April, 2024. We welcomed 57 international artists and 2 group of students in 2024-2025, and are expecting 35 artists and 1 group for 2026!

As you know, Echizen is one of the famous traditional production area of Japanese paper. We are offering paper making workshops in cooperation of the Udatsu Paper & Craft Museum and some other local paper mills.

The special program “SUMI-WASHI” launched last year is very popular, and This year’s program is currently underway. We are pleased to introduce a new special program “WASHI-MOKUHANGA”, which will offer participants the rare opportunity to experience the full process of traditional Japanese papermaking and to create mokuhanga (water-based woodblock prints) using washi paper they have made themselves.
