BACKGROUND<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Echizen has been a center of papermaking for more than 1,500 years. Its durable and beautiful washi has been prized throughout Japan. In particular, Echizen hosho has been famously used in ukiyo-e woodblock prints for centuries. Today, Echizen remains one of Japan\u2019s leading washi-producing regions, dedicated to preserving this traditional craft.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Udatsu Paper & Craft Museum promotes the understanding of traditional papermaking techniques. Housed in a beautifully preserved mid-Edo period wooden building\u2014now designated as a Registered Tangible Cultural Property\u2014the museum offers an ideal setting for exploring the heritage of Echizen\u2019s papermaking culture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
