Tuula is widely known as an expert in Japanese woodblock printmaking and traditional papermaking. Tuula lived in Kyoto, Japan over 20 years during which time she became familiar with Japanese culture and arts. She moved back to Finland in 2012, and currently lives and works in Helsinki. Besides making prints and book art Tuula works as a freelance graphic designer and active writer.<\/td><\/tr>
Exhibition<\/td>Several solo- and group exhibitions in Finland since 1980 and in Japan since 1990. Group exhibitions also in Europe, Canada, United States and in Australia. Art works in several museum and city collections in Finland. Published books and articles since 1995.<\/td><\/tr>
Message<\/td>I made my first woodblock prints with oil-based inks. Adding color on the block with a roller felt awkward and messy, but nevertheless I loved it. Everything changed when I came to Japan for studying mokuhanga and Japanese papermaking. Use of watercolors and variety of printing brushes gave me the freedom of expression that I had always wanted. I also learned how the quality of the paper is crucial for getting good results. It gives me great pleasure to make all kind of experiments with mokuhanga techniques. I hope that I can transmit that enthusiasm toward to my students, too.<\/td><\/tr>
