Message<\/td>I was born in Fukui, in the Echizen Pottery Village. I was raised, however, in the ancient capital of Nara. Currently, I am living back in Fukui, by the Okamoto Shrine enshrining the Paper Goddess, right in the heart of the Echizen Paper Village.
I finished my Fine Arts degree at a small, liberal arts college specializing in environmental studies. Only to return to Japan and face one of the worst environmental devastations of my generation; the Fukushima nuclear disaster.
After that event, I was unable to make art. But slowly, I started making woodblock prints, as if carving what was being dismissed into the forgotten past, with a knife, into history. It was during this time that I discovered Echizen Washi. I was awed by the juxtaposition. On one hand, there is a traditional craft that has been passed down for over a millennium, trying to stay alive. On the other, radioactive waste generations to come are now forced to inherit. Over the years, I have created woodblock prints as a personal means to try and grasp this age we are living in. I use Echizen Washi as a wise vessel to express my views.<\/td><\/tr>
