Being the former capital city in Japan, Nara is the birthplace of sumi ink and Japanese paper, artists in this program will experience the rich Japanese culture where mokuhanga plays an essential role in the cultural history.

Toma House is located in Takabatke-cho, the neighbourhood was once populated by priest families serving in Kasugataisha Shrine. With the sacred mountain Mikasayama, Nara Park, historic monuments and cultural places nearby, artists will enjoy traditional Japanese lifestyle with friendly local people and artists from different countries.

This will the first-ever mokuhanga training program held by Toma House AIR.

Toma House is an art space in an 18th-century former Shinto priest family’s house in Nara city. Since 2017, exhibitions and art events have been happening on-site while restoration works were carried out to preserve the then-collapsing house. Our goal is to foster and advocate art to the public.

You cam watch a beautiful video “Toma Unrestored” and an amazing digital art project “Digitoma” held in December, 2021.
