2016 Mokuhanga Basic Training Program A

MI-LAB is happy to announce the artists selected to participate in the 2016 Mokuhanga Basic Training Program A. The six artists will arrive in Japan on April 20, 2016 to learn water-based woodblock printmaking. They will spend 5 weeks creating mokuhanga at the residence in Lake Kawaguchi, Japan.

Cfshe Gallery is pleased to present a three artists` group exhibition. Katsutoshi Yuasa (printmaking), Yoshitaka Nanjo (painting) and Takashi Katayama (painting) were invited to participate in artist- in- residence programs in Norway for summer 2015. They are going to show new works created after the residency.

CfSHE Gallery is pleased to present the recent works of April Vollmer, New York based American artist and printmaker who works primarily in Mokuhanga, Japanese Woodblock, from October 3rd 2015 to October 18th 2015. Vollmer participated in Nagasawa Art Park Artist-in-Residence program in 2004 and worked on the book about Mokuhanga as the first writer- researcher at MI-LAB in 2013. She recently had her book “Japanese Woodblock Print Workshop” published by Watson-Guptill in July 2015.

Artist’s Biography
Vollmer graduated from CUNY Hunter College MFA in New York in 1983 and has shown her works extensively throughout US and Japan.


April Vollmer’s Book: Japanese Woodblock Print Workshop

We are pleased to announce that a residence artist April Vollmer will have her book “Japanese Woodblock Print Workshop” published by Watson-Guptill in July 2015. Vollmer wrote this book based on her experience teaching mokuhanga workshops in the U.S. It begins with a description of the relevance of the technique today, and includes an overview of its history, with chapters on printing technique, washi handmade paper, and a discussion of contemporary artists who use and teach mokuhanga. The book includes many photographs of Japanese tools and materials, and is illustrated with color photographs from over forty contemporary creative artists.

Vollmer participated in the Nagasawa Art Park program in 2004 and worked on the book as the first writer-researcher at MI-LAB in 2013.

MI-LAB Basic Traning Program A/B Exhibition

MI-LAB is happy to inform you that 2015 Basic Program of Mokuhanga residency was successfully closed with 12 excellent artists on July 5, 2015.They stayed Lake Kawaguchi MI-LAB residence and learnt by two instructors and self-trained the skills and expressions.
CfSHE Gallery will have their prints and residence photo documents show from August 8, 2015.

2013 Researcher / Writer Program

April’s research project is called “Japanese Woodblock Workshop” and is an outline of the material she covers in teaching a short class of Mokuhanga. The publication of her research is scheduled in the US in 2014.


IMPACT 8 Report: Dialogue and Encounter in Dundee

IMPACT 8 international printmaking conference was held in Dundee, Scotland in UK between the August 27 and 31, 2013. The small and historic city Dundee attracted 430 participants, mostly the central figures in printmaking who exchanged the cutting edge information of printmaking through exhibitions, paper presentations and workshops for 5 days.

MI-LAB is pleased to present the latest news of IMPACT 8 by inviting April Vollmer who visits Japan for the MI-LAB Research program 2013. April is a printmaker as well as an instructor who has participated in many of major international printmaking conferences including IMPACT 8. She will present her eyewitness report of IMPACT 8 in terms of how the conference enables international artists and printing business people to exchange the knowledge and experience of printmaking every two years.

Ms. April Vollmer will present such innovative scenes of a printmaking conference by showing many photos from IMPACT 8. Please make your registration and come to enjoy the hot news of IMPACT 8.

Wood block printmaking workshop/Pop pattern chiyo-gami

Ukiyoe print — the same — various patterns in the second half of Edo — Japanese paper — printing (Mokuhan-suri)– the colored paper carried out is produced.It has been efficiently employed in art of a life article.In a workshop, wood block printmaking of the pop pattern which the artists of instruction carved is used,and printmaking of a water based print is experienced.Moreover, an envelope, a card, and a book jacket are also built with the printed pop colored paper.
